Change is everywhere and seems to be occurring faster and faster with each passing year. The roles and symbiotic relationships between dental specialists and general practitioners offer a great example. While these relationships continue to evolve and grow, they are being reviewed and re-invented to maintain and further build this important partnership so it remains successful for both parties.
Imaging technology has improved tremendously in recent years. Better guided treatment tools and procedures have also become more readily available. Clinical education opportunities have expanded to develop needed skills. General dentists are gaining the confidence to tackle more specialty treatment needs. This comes at a good time with overall patient traffic being relatively flat to declining in recent years according to ADA statistics. Expanding their treatment repertoire has proven to be a viable way for GPs to maintain or increase their practice traffic and income in such an environment.
Currently, general dentists provide over 70% of endodontic treatments. Within the next 10 years, over 50% of dental treatments involving extractions and implants are projected to be performed by general dentists, according to Dentistry IQ. Clear aligners are making it easier for GPs to provide effective basic orthodontic treatments in their practices. Some are even beginning to produce clear aligners and other oral appliances in their offices with the help of 3D printing technologies.
What does this mean for dental specialists? Specialists are and will continue to be the “go-to” for complex cases. Their laser focus and well-honed skills enable them to produce successful outcomes; even in challenging situations, there are likely to be many more cases given the pandemic and resulting deferred dental care. A key to this success is growing and leveraging the network of referring GPs that feed these cases to specialists they trust. Having the latest technology and a documented track record of successful clinical outcomes, as well as delighted patient testimonials, can help build that critical trust and confidence in the eyes of more referring GPs.

Oral Surgery – According to Trendstat.com, there has been a 6.3% increase in implant procedures from 2019 tp 2020 despite the pandemic. Experts estimate implant procedures will increase over 23% between 2020 to 2026.
Periodontic Dentistry – Did you know that periodontal disease increases with age? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 47% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease and by 65 years or older, 70% of adults will have periodontal disease.
